Pont du Gard to Saint-Raphaël

Updated: Jun 26, 2019

I started the day in Paris, with a morning walk around Montmartre, and now I’m in the small town of Saint-Raphaël on the Côte d’Azur. I took the train to Avignon to get a car and see the Pont du Gard. My goodness, it is incredible. I mean, it’s one of the largest ancient Roman structures and the tallest ancient bridge, estimated to have been built around 50 AD. Facts, but something about seeing it and walking across it blew my mind. That’s some clever engineering and a lot of work to get good water where they needed it to go. Hmmm.

The late afternoon sun was perfect. I’m only slightly burnt from sitting in the Gardon River. I did not complete my 2.5 hr drive before dark, because I got slightly confused a couple of times. I don’t have a gps or wifi in the car, so I’m relying on the google maps I downloaded and my best guesses as to when to turn. Dare I say traffic circles are far superior to four way intersections?

My AirBnB host in Saint-Raphaël is the sweetest little old lady. She understands English pretty well, but doesn’t speak it much. I’m the opposite with French. So we had an entire conversation speaking our own languages slowly and comprehending each other fairly well, with the help of some photos on our phones. Her great granddaughter is adorable, her grandson has a nice boat, and her grandson’s wife is “not very nice.”

Bonne nuit!
